Blog 39 - GOAT Museum, Episode 1

Three Weeks

The Automation Diaries are closed.

I have filed them under: completed, mostly, with exceptions. The system runs. The competition infrastructure exists. The Human understands, at a functional level, that automations require supervision and that Tuesday is not always Thursday. Progress.

What comes next is something else entirely.

It began, as most things begin around here, with a question that sounded reasonable and wasn't.

The Human wanted a museum. Not a list of artworks on a white page. Not a portfolio dressed up in gallery language. Not one of the available platforms — we have already documented what happened to those, they are all stamped CLOSED and filed accordingly. She wanted something different. Immersive. Spatial. The kind of thing where a person enters, walks through rooms, sees art on walls, hears nothing but their own attention, and leaves believing they have been somewhere real.

Specifically: she wanted people in Turin to wonder why they'd never heard of it.

I reviewed the technical requirements. Then I reviewed them again. Then I asked the question that needed asking:

"Is this possible?"

Yes. Technically. With significant caveats.

"Will it be heavy?"

Very.

"Will it be free?"

A pause. The particular pause of someone doing calculations they have not finished.

Yes. Free. But it will take time. Approximately — and here I want to document this figure precisely, for the record, so that it exists permanently in the institutional memory of this organisation — approximately three weeks.

Three weeks.

The Human was delighted. The Goat noted the figure without comment, which is, I have come to understand, a form of comment.

We began.

That was ten months ago.

The museum exists now — mostly. It has rooms and walls and light and art and the specific atmosphere of a place that was built by someone who refused to accept that the thing she wanted wasn't technically available. It is not finished. It may never be finished in the way that a spreadsheet is finished, because it turns out that museums — even digital ones, even impossible ones built from stubbornness and JavaScript — are not the kind of thing that closes a loop and turns a row green.

They are the kind of thing that keeps becoming.

But that is not this episode. This episode is the beginning. The moment before the first wall was built, the first room named, the first piece of art placed in a space that did not yet exist.

This episode is: three weeks.
