The inaugural "Where the Colours Live" international art competition has closed. After careful consideration, Andrea Grappolo is the winner for his oil painting "Allegro sostenuto."
Andrea's work is now on exhibition in the Atelier Dome, 16 August - 16 September, 2026.

"Winner by full merit for the great quality of the work — a very well-conducted oil painting — in the Move In Colors "Where The Colours Live!" competition is Italian artist Andrea Grappolo with "Allegro sostenuto." Awarded not only for the undeniable ability to finely shade yellow and gray in the work, but above all for the successful assonance between color and matter.
Andrea Grappolo does not paint real scenes but the quintessence of a possible reality, everyday, made of glass, plastic, steel and polymers. A courageous artist, he abandons in his figurative representation everything that appears pleasant to our physical experience, like the velvety softness of skin tones, the silkiness of hair. He cancels every reference to natural sensations: from wood to stone, from the depth of the sky to the pleasant physicality of fabric draping. He imagines an aseptic space, in which impulsive, history-less characters agitate. Yet, despite this alien world, the use of color sculpts and chisels; it makes us feel this imaginary space as harmonious and attractive.
The author accompanies the work with a disorienting conversation that we listen to in fragments, like words floating in sidereal space. We, mere observers, grasp an intrinsic and deeply human warmth in it. What pleases in Grappolo's art is precisely this spontaneous and colloquial freshness that makes the heterogeneous characters of these graceful paintings affectionately close.
The artist hints at some preferred colors: from Van Dyck brown — "unstable; its drying time is unpredictable. It evokes the solidity of rock and the texture of steel" — to bitumen — "color unstable by definition. You never know what its final appearance will be. It is chthonic, sulfurous and magmatic, the color of smoke and burning petroleum." He is fascinated by everything that seems to hide a passage to secret worlds, whose exploration drives him to take refuge in the unknown. Grappolo sees everything luminous as sharp and almost aggressive. Cadmium yellow, for example, he feels as "the color of the sun and danger."
The painting "Allegro sostenuto" does not help escape from daily routine: it could seem like phantasmagoric painting, the realm of unbridled fantasy. Instead, it is a reflection on the impulses of the majority, on moments of exasperated violence, on the breaking of any scheme: these degraded elements do not belong to Andrea Grappolo's art. His is a strongly poetic vision, told, however, through Martian eyes."
