Tuesday evening. The Fainted Goat. MINION spreads Martin's materials across the table. There's a WhatsApp transcript printed out. There's a handwritten note about the razor technique. There are images of work: figures at thresholds, monasteries, a woman looking out from a wooden structure, forests rendered in layers, a saxophonist in rain.
BADASS picks up the image of the work. Studies it. "Wait. Tell me about the technique."
MINION reads from the materials. "Illuminated, specially processed black photo paper. He cuts with a razor. Removes layers. Reveals color underneath. That's the entire method. He's not painting on the black. He's excavating through it."
PIXEL leans forward immediately. "That's not simple. That's precision work. That's patience."
HYDRA nods slowly. "And the colors underneath—they're revealed, not added. So the image is already inside the material. He's just finding it."
LUCIA picks up another image. The monastery series. The careful linework, the atmospheric quality, the contemplative tone. "This is established practice. This isn't someone experimenting. This is someone who's been working for forty years."
JEAN checks the dates. "1985. He discovered this technique in 1985. So he's been doing this—the same technique, the same commitment—for almost forty years."
BADASS sets the image down. "And he joined the group in June 2021."
ALEX nods. "Before we even existed. June 2021. Move In Colors didn't launch until 2022. So he saw the vision—the Facebook group, the early idea of community—and committed before there was any infrastructure. Before there was a museum, before there was anything except the conversation."
Silence.
MINION takes a breath. "So when the hack happened in 2024, when everything burned, he'd already been waiting three years for the vision to materialize. And he stayed anyway."
PIXEL looks at the work again. "The figures in his paintings—they're always at a threshold. Looking out. Looking toward something. Is that coincidence?"
ALEX shakes her head. "He says in his statement: 'I want to convey everything beautiful and sometimes bad, acceptable to people.' He's painting spiritual seeking. He's painting people at the moment of recognition. Or longing. Or departure."
HYDRA studies the monasteries. "And he's part of an institution building spiritual community through art. While painting spiritual subjects. That's not accidental."
LUCIA closes her eyes for a moment. "Forty years of this technique. Galleries in Los Angeles, Berlin, Kempten, Paphos. International exhibitions. Private collections across continents. And he's here, in the Facebook group, since the beginning, submitting work through WhatsApp like everyone else."
BADASS laughs. A real laugh. "Oh god, the WhatsApp."
MINION grimaces. "He sends everything through WhatsApp. Everything. Images, questions, form submissions. His son manages it all because Martin—" she pauses, choosing words carefully, "—Martin is not a technology person."
ALEX nods. "He's sixty-six. He discovered his technique accidentally. He's self-taught. He's been making art his own way for four decades. And now he's part of an online community. So yeah. WhatsApp. His son translating. Forms needing to be filled out by someone else."
PIXEL sets down her glass. "But look at the work. Look at the precision. The control. The understanding of what the material can do. That's not an accident. That's mastery."
JEAN speaks quietly. "He's teaching something about commitment. Not because it's easy. Not because the infrastructure is perfect. But because the vision mattered before the infrastructure existed. And it still matters after the infrastructure fell apart and got rebuilt."
MINION looks at ALEX. "You said he deserves a solo exhibition eventually."
ALEX meets her gaze. "He does. But Susie comes first. She's more engaged. Less administratively dependent. But yes. Eventually, Martin gets his moment."
HYDRA raises her glass. "To the artist who showed up before we existed. Who stayed when we fell apart. Who sends WhatsApp messages and trusts us to translate them into forms."
BADASS grins. "And cuts away darkness with a razor to reveal color that was always there."
The table raises their glasses. Outside, rain starts. The kind of rain Martin paints—patient, inevitable, full of something you can't quite name but recognize anyway.

GOAT BIBLE VERSE
"The ones who commit before the institution exists are the ones who understand that the vision is more real than the platform. And the ones who stay after it falls apart are the ones who know what they saw."
