Monday evening. The Fainted Goat. Just the usual table โ MINION, BADASS, PIXEL, HYDRA, MARGOT, and Alex, three drinks in before anyone says anything worth writing down.
"Right," MINION says, pouring. "Thought experiment. Go back before the museum. Before the Domes. There was a Facebook group with over five thousand members, and there was a WordPress website that kept asking for more money to do less and less."
BADASS: "Paying more every month for a site that worked worse every month. That's not a website. That's a subscription to frustration."
PIXEL: "And then the page just vanished from under you. Not people drifting off โ Facebook locked you out of your own account. Banned, no explanation, no way back in. Five thousand people still out there, and you couldn't even post 'I'm still here.'"
ALEX, not looking up from the glass: "I didn't even get a reason. One day I had access, the next I was locked out of my own history. New profile, new page, calling everyone back one message at a time, hoping they'd recognise me without the page to prove it."
MINION: "And the WordPress site was still eating money the whole time. Paying for a house while you were locked out of your own front door."
BADASS: "Paying more, getting less, and now also banned. That's not a bad month. That's a bad year wearing a bad month's clothes."
MINION: "That's when a sassy AI with no manners and no patience for sunk cost said, more or less: stop patching the old thing. Show your real idea."
BADASS: "Rude, considering you'd already spent money on the old thing and just got banned out of the rest of it."
"Extremely rude," MINION says. "Also correct."
ALEX: "I didn't have a plan. I had a woman, a laptop, a profile I had to rebuild from scratch, and a refusal to let it all just evaporate because Facebook decided I didn't exist anymore."
PIXEL: "So what was the real idea?"
"Don't do what everybody else does," MINION says. "That was it. The association already existed, legally, properly. What you needed wasn't a mascot or a miracle. You needed to stop being a grey website with grey artists on it. Be original. Be eccentric. Call real artists real artists."
HYDRA: "Which is a strange thing to hear from an AI."
MARGOT, who has been quiet until now: "It's not strange. It's the only honest thing anyone had said about the brand in years. Grey doesn't get remembered. Grey doesn't get forgiven for being late, or odd, or stubborn. You needed a voice people would recognise even locked out of everything else."
MINION: "I didn't say it gently. I said it the way you'd expect. And somewhere in that conversation, the GOAT showed up. Not as a plan. As the shape the idea took once it stopped being polite."
HYDRA: "And the herd was created."
BADASS: "Which is how we ended up here. A museum built by goats who argue about everything, a Vault that's never finished, and a founder who put every evening and every spare euro into keeping it alive after being locked out of the thing she'd already built once."
ALEX, quietly: "We register it all now. Every submission. Every artist. Every cost. Nobody can lock me out of this one, because nobody but me holds the keys. That's the part people don't see from the outside."
MINION raises a glass. "A herd doesn't run on applause. It runs on the person who got banned, rebuilt from nothing, and refused to let that happen twice. And on a handful of goats too stubborn to let her do it alone."
Nobody toasts to anything grand. It's a Monday. The gin is cheap. The conversation is the whole point.
BEST QUOTE
"We register it all."
GOAT BIBLE VERSE
"A herd is not built by shouting. It is built by one person who got locked out and rebuilt the door herself, and the goats who turned up to keep her company while she did it."
COSTS SUSTAINED SO FAR
โฌ350 โ the original WordPress site, built by a friend of a friend, far away, back when "far away" still felt like a reasonable way to build a website
โฌ80/year โ the domain, every year, whether the site worked that month or not
โฌ35โ50/month โ plugins, just to keep the WordPress site limping along
โฌ135 โ the new site + domain with Hostinger, a genuinely good four-year deal with a genuinely good hosting company, built after the lockout
โฌ22/month โ AI subscription, the sassy kind
Time โ more than anyone could invoice for. Learning it all, breaking it, fixing it, learning it again
Everything nobody puts on an invoice โ electricity, because the office is a bedroom or a downstairs room, not a building with its own meter; biscuits and coffee, consumed in quantities nobody will ever admit to; wifi maintenance, because the internet barely reaches us out here and "barely reaches" is not a phrase you want to hear mid-upload
STILL NEEDED
Enough to settle up with the bureaucracy that doesn't care how many goats are involved
Enough to keep improving the association, the website, the idea โ not a wishlist. Just whatever breaks next, because something always does
